Step-by-Step Instructions To
Build a Fire In The Wood Fire Pit
🪵 Prepare the Fire
-
Be sure wood fire pit is at least 10 ft away from house, trees, fences - anything flammable.
-
Never build a fire in the wood fire pit on the wooden deck or under the covered porch cover.
-
Place tinder (crumpled newspaper or approved fire starter material) in center of the fire pit.
-
Add small kindling (thin, dry sticks) in top of tinder in a crisscross or teepee shape for airflow.
-
Place no more than 2–3 small split logs on top of the kindling.
⚠️ Do NOT fill the fire pit full of wood and never build a bonfire.
🔥 Light the Fire
-
Light the tinder/newspaper in a few places. NEVER USE lighter fluid
-
Allow the kindling to catch fire before adding more wood.
-
Add one log at a time, as needed, to maintain a steady flame.
-
Keep flames at a manageable height (generally under 2 feet).
🪵 Maintain Proper Size
-
Keep the fire small and controlled.
-
Do not stack wood higher than the edge of the fire pit.
-
Add wood gradually — never all at once.
-
Never build bonfires.
-
Overloading the fire pit increases the risk of flying embers.
👀 Monitor the Fire (Critical Safety Rule)
🚨 Never leave a fire unattended — not even for a minute.
An adult MUST be present and actively supervising the fire at all times.
-
Be mindful of sparks and embers escaping the pit.
-
Avoid burning during windy conditions.
-
Keep children at a safe distance.
-
Do not sit too close to the flames.
🌊 Extinguish the Fire Completely
-
Stop adding wood well before you plan to end the evening.
-
Pour water over the embers.
-
Stir the ashes with a stick or shovel.
-
Add more water until everything is cool to the touch.
✔ The fire is out only when ashes are completely cool — no heat, no glow, no smoke.
